if you launch 'wine diablo2.exe', search

[AppDefaults\\diablo2.exe\\x11drv]
"Desktop" = "1024x768"

if it doesnt exist just add it.
if it doesnt work,
start an IRC client on irc.freenode.net, channel #winehq :)
