I forgot to ask: what file system are you using?

I looked them up in the source tree: ./include/winerror.h. There is a
copy on the net: http://source.winehq.org/source/include/winerror.h

Beware that most codes in this file are decimal but in the logs mostly
in hex.

There is a remarkable similar bug in bugzilla:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2287

where a call fails complaining about the existence of a file that was
just successfully deleted.

Same wine version, both Fedora Core 2. Hmmmmm.
