Crossover works but wine crashes. Why?

Ok, there is something different about the way crossover sets up wine 
than it is set up by other methods.  I had tried winesetuptk, the wine 
setup app from frankscorner, and the mandrake rpm.  These all created 
the same problem.  However, copying ~/.cxoffice/dotwine to ~/.wine and 
changing just a few things fixed the problem. Any ideas what caused this?
