I tried to run it as "LANG=en_US wine setup.exe" and
"unset LANG ; wine setup.exe" just to be sure.
Same problem, so it's not the locale.

Yes, exactly. Sometimes it gives me a messagebox about DirectX couldn't
be installed which I cannot quote exactly as I cannot persuade it to
give it now.
