I've had this problem a couple of times, especially when using Wine on a
remote X server.  I solved it by adding the following to ~/.wine/user.reg 
(don't ask me why it's not autodetected or why it's not even a FAQ.)

[Software\\Wine\\X11 Driver]
"ClientSideWithRender"="N"
