I finally got dosbox working once I figured out some of its quirks (like 
insisting data files/directories be uppercase).  I do have to run it in a 
xterm window as it insists I must have a mouse though I never use one with 
MC8! All in all, it IS working better than it ever did under wine and I 
didn't have to resort to Plan B: moving to the MC9 Windows version.
