I'm also running Dapper as well, and I wanted to offer some advice that
I found useful.  You should probably use the special Wine repository
for Ubuntu specified on it's site, the standard repositories don't have
the latest version nor are updated ( here's the repository < deb
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt dapper main > (don't use the <>).
Also, Wine isn't very good at deciding CD drives from hard drives
(though it detects them), and will mistake your CD drive for a hard
drive.  This can be corrected by opening the WINE configuration file
(located in /usr/bin/winecfg , winecfg is the file name), selecting the
drives tab, selecting the CD drive by clicking on it's letter, clicking
show advanced, selecting CD-Rom as the type, and finally clicking
apply.  To answer your question on installing and running Widows apps,
you can start the exe files by double clicking on them, as long as your
in Dapper, this will run them in WINE.  To run them in a terminal, type
<wine FILENAME>, and make sure your in the right directory.  Once a
program is installed, a new category in the KDE or Gnome menu will
appear labelled Wine, this is the WINE Windows start menu.  Many WINE
files in /usr/bin/ offer a simple and easy way to perform various
tasks, wine is the program itself that you can tell certain programs to
run in.  Hope this information helps, sorry if this post is confusing.
