Probably not.  Many USB devices are idiot boxes that have only the
most basic functionality to act as a USB device.  They are designed to
have their primary software (firmware) uploaded to them when
connected.  The firmware is not Windows specific but is often
contained in the Windows installer.  Sane (or is it udev?) has to be
configured to recognize the scanner model and send the firmware to
it.  On Ubuntu Edgy some are included in /usr/lib/sane.  Mandriva had
a wizard to install it.
