There are special graphics beyond directx 8.1 but acording to a recent forum post they would be easy to implement in openGL,

Unfortunately despite plenty of interest there is little active development (just a few people doing it in their spare time), so their project servers more as a proof of concept than anything else.

That said all the code is available (GPL), and the specs for whats missing exist
