The proprietary drivers are now compareable to NVidia's, at least for
3D. For 2D both suck.
A few months ago they changed their complete OpenGL implementation to
a new cross-platform one (the same way nvidia is doing now for some
years), and now the proprietary drivers perform equal to their windows
counterparts.
http://www.phoronix.com/ did some testing and they were impressed.
