Exactly.  ESR's essay on asking smart questions and the applicable man pages 
ought to be mandatory minimum reading for any mailing list.

This is a big reason why I'm massively against dumbing down the list to cater 
to people who can't be bothered to make an attempt at answering thier own 
question.
