How cruel.  It was implemented in wine-0.9.52, the version that also
introduced the hang!

Anyway, try using a version of wine close to what he used
(wine-0.9.49) but earlier than wine-0.9.52, run
  wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
  sh winetricks vcrun2003
before installing, and follow that guy's recipe.
