I might be wrong but *I think* that the open source drivers for your graphics card are currently 2D only (which is the reason Ubuntu went ahead and installed the official AMD/ATI ones). I don't think installing the open source drivers instead is going to help you. Are you running Ubuntu 8.10? or 8.04?
