You can try with the latest beta 190.* drivers
Look for nvidia PPA to get ubuntu packages (or install it manually
using nvidia's site instructions).
In any case, just to be safe, uninstall completely the previous driver
before proceeding (and reboot [or stop X, unload kernel module, ...])
