Here are a few suggestions to try if you encounter problems with Team Fortress 2

Graphic problems:

Use the -dxlevel 81 option to force DirectX8 (commonly reported for Ubuntu users)
1) load steam first before running the TF2 game
2) expect the game list to take a few minutes to load
3)add the -dxlevel 81 to TF2 by going through the "Properties" button in steam
