By 3-D effects I am talking about Compiz/XGL effects which come bundled with Ubuntu if you support them.

Have you checked the application database page (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3620&iTestingId=28505 for instance)? It usually contains useful information.

Have you also tried messing with different configurations? It often helps.

Besides that, there is a new Wine version. Consider upgrading, as it is always good to stay updated.
