Some logs might be useful? (not sure what you posted... There might be
some additional debug options which might at least make clear what the
issue is...)

I just did it that way since I happened to be logged in... And running
X directly as a normal user without going through startx / a session
manager (which tends to start lots of other crap) seemed like too much
trouble...
