What videocard + drivers are you using? I could try my copy of the game later on but was too lazy to crack it, so I'm playing it on Windows right now. To me the issue looks like either a driver bug or perhaps the game is using win32 fonts to draw the menu and in that case, try to install the ms core fonts using winetricks.
