The way I stop pulseaudio completely is by looking up this site http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/ubuntu-904-jaunty-keeping-the-beast-pulseaudio-at-bay/ The guy hasn't made one for 9.10 but I basically used the same method he used for jaunty to disable pulseaudio completely.
