You are using an ATI card which usually has faulty drivers, do you have Direct 3D Acceleration? Also, have you turned off/disabled any 3D effects? Also, be sure to try to run the game in an emulated desktop (configurable via winecfg) and see if it works that way.

Could what you described be related, by any chance, to the checkerboard of doom ( http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1173 ) ?
