Drives have two ln -s  1 linking to mounted path <drive letter>:  one ment to link to device <drive letter>:: 
Yes big difference in meaning between : and ::.   ln -s isoimage.iso <drive letter>:: as well has the path setting you already have Sometimes works.

But if application calls any direct cdrom device controls it will fail. 

Basically meaning mounting loop back iso and setting device link only sometimes works.

There is such thing as a cd emulator for linux.  It does support more.   Due to copy protections in games this can still fail as well.  Ie game developers don't really like running from iso or other imaging methods.
