Although these are GREAT ideas, delaying messages to the mailing list is NOT one of them.  If we could send out a second message, linked to the first with 'EDIT' in the subject line that would be best.  I don't know if there is a module that can do this for the message board product we are using.  If it existed, then we could go with this type of thought with the ability to remove the edit feature after the thread is updated.
