Keep an eye out for GIMP 3.x, which should have 16 bit colour.

BTW, since GIMP goes to some trouble to fit the Linux GNOME metaphor as
well as the L&F of OSX and Winders, have you ever thought that Photoshop
just might be the odd man out?
