what graphics card do you have? do you use the proprietary driver or the open-source one? if it's an ATI card, then that's probably your problem. ATI cards are very buggy with linux and 3D apps. if it's an INTEL card, that's almost certainly the problem, as INTEL has chosen not to support Linux at all.
