Did you have a look at the appdb entry?
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=2459
You could check the workarounds and add your own entry with the latest
wine version (1.4-rc3 as of today)

BTW wine 1.3.38 doesn't exist...
