I'm just wondering what the advantages are if you're compiling from source. Is there any (noticeable) performance difference if I do so? Is it recommended I do this? I have a somewhat restricted system (900 Mhz CPU, 512 MB RAM) so it'd be nice if Wine could run a bit faster (though the recent memory management optimizations in Wine certainly seemed to help already).<br>

difference (maybe if you try to run 3dmark you will get some additional
points - but don't count on noticeable speed improvements). And because
your PC is rather old - it will take you about 2 hour to compile wine
(on my old Duron 1200 it took about 1 hour 30 minutes). The only
advantages you may get are: "fresh" wine if you are using "not so
popular" distro, you can also add some additional patches to your wine
to improve some things (and usually brake some at the same time ;] ).
