Additional clue: I just noticed that when Wine "locks up" after pressing TAB to
leave the NUM column, and after I press CTRL-C to exit, Wine reports:

/usr/bin/wine: [: too many arguments
Wine failed with return code
/usr/bin/wine: [: too many arguments
/usr/bin/wine: [: -ge: unary operator expected
