"If the intention is for one app to lock everyone out of the
server except for itself during some critical operation, then
XGrabServer/XUngrabServer will work.  Between the grab and ungrab
only requests from the Display* that called XGrabServer will be
processed."

I decided to check with them about where I could find docs on the X API and 
told them the nature of the situation, and that is what I received.
