I tried with X server with 16bit, the msgbox went away but only gives me a
blackscreen. 
I also tried with Stefans ddraw patch and 24bit X, but error is still there.

maybe it doesnt like trace:ddraw:fill_caps : Z bits = 24 ?? should return 32 or 16
