OK, ran through the regression testing process.  Results from GIT are:

That this is in the X11 driver makes sense given the bug is triggered by
keyboard input.  As an amendment to my prior post, it seems that mouse clicks do
not trigger the bug; the screen does not become unresponsive until the first
keyboard event is received.
