This bug can be worked around with the following recipe:

 $ rm -rf .wine
 $ sh winetricks mdac28 jet40 art2kmin
 $ cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/KOBOLD/shoai.80/
 $ wine S-HOAI.exe
