on a seemingly related note, an older game targeted at Windows 95, 'Need for
Speed', the installer aborts with a message saying:

"Sorry, you need 495489k more memory to run this program.  Please refer to the
reference card on how to free more memory."

Both programs, Need for Speed 2 and the installer for Need for Speed (1), are
not determining correct memory availability?
