The original poster now says:
"3.  Just now I tried the quick mask and it is working in Wine but not in
Crossover. (It was not working in Wine yesterday - don't know what's
different).   The behavior is that I am only able to add to the mask area.  I
am not able to remove any of the mask area.  While working on a quick mask, I

Hmm.  Well, it's working for him today.  Let's let this sit for
a while to see if it comes back for him, and close it in a week
or so if he can't.
