Wine's D3D is layered on top of opengl and there should not be any memory
problems. Also in opengl mode, WoW uses dirert3d to query the amount of video
memory, so that explains why both opengl and direct3d can have the same issue.
Personally I think that your problem is a driver bug. Especially normal opengl
mode shouldn't be affected by memory issues as once there is not enough memory
infrequently used textures for instance are moved to system memory. Sure this
can lower performance but it shouldn't crash.
