With today's wine, you still need to rename drive_c, but
the crash no longer happens.  Instead, the installer
aborts with a "path not found" dialog.  The log shows

err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"Path not found\r\n"

I gather the CatRoot directory is related to Windows File Protection
and is supposed to contain signed catalogs of files; see
