If I can find another Linux user to see if I didn't mess up dependencies on the
installs involved for setting up the regression test I may attempt it again.
Sorry for my noobness with Linux. 

In the mean time I found out something that might have some value. In the
program under the menu, "File/Preferences/General Scene Settings/Interactive
Renderer/," there is a choice for either "OpenGL" or "Eovia Software." Setting
it to "OpenGL" returned the document view completely to normal. (the OpenGL is
normaly resurved for studio level hardware so this was unexpected)
