fwiw, in Gutsy, to build recent metacity, do

sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev libgconf2-dev
wget
http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/gnome/sources/metacity/2.23/metacity-2.23.8.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf metacity-2.23.8.tar.bz2
cd metacity-2.23.8
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/metacity
make

Haven't figured out how to use it yet, though... maybe just kill
the existing one and start the new one?
