The fix for this is to go into User Preferences in Notes, and check the
"Disable embedded browser for MIME mail".

The rendering of HTML mail in Notes 8 has changed, so that the messages are
rendered using the system's default browser.  For Windows, this is IE; which of
course won't work in Wine.

Checking the above option forces Notes to use it's own internal browser for
rendering the messages.
