This is a known issue (the direct rendering one). Most likely the drivers are
running out of virtual memory (we only leave a few hundred MB for normal
libraries). The nvidia drivers seem to be more tolerant to this. The real
solution is to override the memory functions of libGL.so and forward those to
win32 calls, so the drivers can use win32 memory of which we have enough. There
is nothing else that can be done about it (except for using a memory hack which
is attached to some other bug report).
