How spore is randomly brighter on startup (if text is grey, no UI shows)

I think that another problem exists somewhere as the user interface doesn't
load every time.

You can tell when it is not going to load as the text of the first screen looks
grey instead of black. (see attachment) Everything looks brighter then it
should be and the EA logo doesn't load.

This happens a lot but mysteriously I have noticed it happens less after
compiling and installing wine? Anyway, it's purely random if the UI shows up or
not.
