It seems to have been related to the no-CD crack.  Possibly that was actually
what was broken, i.e., maybe this isn't Wine's fault.  When I upgraded in a
different way, without using a no-CD crack, the problem didn't occur.  I posted
how I did it here:

So this is no longer a problem for me.
