That error,
X Error of failed request:  BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)
  Major opcode of failed request:  17 (X_GetAtomName)
might also be an X server error.  Does the problem go
away with an old X server (if gentoo makes that easy to try)?

Also, if it's a wine error, you can track it down better with
  WINEDEBUG=+synchronous,+x11drv
