Here's the configure line built by the ebuild:

./configure --prefix=/usr --host=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var/lib --libdir=/usr/lib32 --sysconfdir=/etc/wine
--with-curses --with-opengl --with-x

I'm using GCC 4.1.2, glibc 2.6; what else would be relevant?

Yeah, other programs (including Notepad and a couple of apps that I use
regularly) work without any apparent problems.
