I am home now and the result is that 0.9.52 once again doesn't work at all, not
on the local desktop nor over VNC. No time for further investigation, but there
is some new debugging output that isn't there with 0.9.50:

err:ddraw:PixelFormat_DD2WineD3D Unknown Pixelformat!
