Wine cannot lockup your system, unless you're running it as root. Most likely,
the video drivers are buggy/mismatched to your kernel.

You can try running your program with:
$ wine your_program.exe &> ~/gta_log.txt

And after regaining control of your system, ~/gta_log.txt should have the log
up until the lockup.

Still, not a wine problem (the lockup that is).
