I had a problem very similar to the one you describe. I got memory violations
when trying to start the game I have AMD64 with ATI Radeon 700 running
Ubuntu/Hardy and wine 1.1.0.

Disabling fglrx allowed the game to run, but it was painful! I upgraded to
Catalyst 8.6 (Ubuntu repository only has 8.3) and I was able to get the game to
run.

To upgrade your fglrx drivers to the latest version of Catalyst see the
following documentation:
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeon.html
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide#Method_2:_Manual_Method_.28installing_Catalyst_8.6.29

I'm now experiencing a lot of flicker and I'm trying to find a configuration
that will work better than my current setup. However the game is playable :)
