Just some additional details. It looks like not only the characters and the sky
have this problem. I've seen the game running under XP, and I could verify it
happens also for at least:

   * the main menu (in Wine only an orange fog is visible on a black
background, but in the game there's actually a static picture under the fog);
   * the loading screen (in Wine you can only see some small coloured circles
lighting on, while in XP these circles are part of a drawn dragon medallion).

So probably the same bug affects many parts of the game.
I can also confirm that the bug is still there with rc4.
