I'm not using compiz.

My xorg.conf has the display driver as 'ati'.
My card is an Ati Radeon X700 based PCIe card by Sapphire.

However, just when writing up this response I tried: 

glxinfo | grep -i "direct rendering"

Getting:

direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)

I had working DRI at some point so I just assumed it was still the case.
I'll try to get this fixed and test again to see if it was the cause.
