To fix all those build errors, see
 http://wiki.winehq.org/Recommended_Packages
In particular, follow its advice to do
 wget http://kegel.com/wine/hardy.sh
 sudo sh hardy.sh

To set a 16 bit graphics mode, you'll need to change /etc/X11/xorg.conf
The only line to change is DefaultDepth; change it from
    DefaultDepth    24
to
    DefaultDepth    16
and then log in again.
