I found out what the problem was. It has nothing to do with wine after all. I
tried many different versions and finally found out that there were no modes
defined in xorg.conf. As soon as I did xorg could change the screen resolution,
even to modes that weren't defined in xorg.conf. Really weird. Closing this
bug.
